Weston is a proper town. Not just in size - though at 80,000 people it's by far the largest in North Somerset - but in character. The Grand Pier has been rebuilt twice and keeps on standing. The Victorian crescents face the sea with the same honey-coloured confidence they always have. The mud at low tide is part of the place, and if you've walked out on it once you know why the tidal range in the Severn Estuary is one of the largest anywhere in the world. The Tropicana has hosted Banksy and community theatre and summer markets, and Worlebury Hill sits above it all with its Iron Age fort and its wooded paths. People feel strongly about Weston, and rightly so - it has its ups and downs, but it's a town that gets back on its feet.
Worle, spreading out to the east, has grown enormously in recent years - Locking Castle, Locking Parklands, whole new neighbourhoods of families getting settled in. The older village parts still have their own quieter feel, but take a drive through and you'll see just how much has changed. Winscombe is a different world again, sitting at the foot of the Mendips with the old Strawberry Line running through it - a proper village with countryside on the doorstep and a strong sense of itself. Banwell has the castle and the bone caves and that community feel that small Somerset villages do well. And Sandford - well, Sandford has Thatchers. If you're from around here, you don't need to be told what that means.
